Don’t Look Back

There are things I wish I had said differently.

Things I said when I was angry. Things that came out too quickly, too harshly, without enough patience or self-control.

Most of us have moments like these.

Something embarrassing. Something stupid. Something we wish we could take back.

We look back and think:

Why did I say that?

Why did I do that?

If only I had known better.

But sometimes, we did know better.

We simply weren’t strong enough yet to do better.

We hadn’t learned how to regulate our emotions. We hadn’t cultivated enough patience, discipline, or inner strength.

Repentance, not punishment

In Buddhism, 忏悔 is often translated as repentance.

It is not simply feeling guilty.

It is recognizing what we did, regretting it, making amends where possible, and changing so we don’t repeat it.

That’s accountability.

Not spending ten years punishing yourself for something that happened ten years ago.

If you were wrong, apologize.

Repair what you can.

Learn.

Then do better.

Don’t confuse remorse with self-punishment.

Move on

I’m not saying trauma isn’t real, or that painful experiences shouldn’t be processed.

But there is a difference between processing the past and living inside it.

At some point, you’ve understood the lesson.

You’ve acknowledged it.

You’ve done what you can.

Now move on.

Move the fuck on.

The past happened.

It shaped you.

But it doesn’t exist anymore.

You cannot make decisions there.

You cannot change what you said there.

You cannot become better there.

The only place where you have power is now.

Even five minutes ago is already gone.

A bad morning doesn’t have to become a bad day.

A bad day doesn’t have to become a bad week.

A mistake at 10 a.m. doesn’t have to ruin 10:01.

You can always return.

What if they still remember?

Maybe they do.

So what?

People are mostly busy thinking about themselves.

And even if someone still thinks badly of you, obsessing over the past won’t change their mind.

You can’t rewrite their memory.

You can only rewrite what comes next.

Be kinder.

Work harder.

Communicate better.

Show up differently.

Let your actions speak.

If they change their mind, great.

If they don’t, accept it.

Some people will keep an old version of you in their heads.

That’s not yours to control.

Your job is to become a better version of yourself anyway.

Don’t look back

You are not the person you were five years ago.

You know more now.

You’ve lived more.

You’ve grown.

Maybe you didn’t have the strength then.

Maybe you didn’t have the wisdom.

But you have the chance to use both now.

So take the lesson.

Leave the guilt.

Leave the what ifs.

Leave the I should have.

Leave yesterday where it belongs.

Behind you.

There is a life happening right now.

And you are still in it.

Look forward.

Don’t look back.
