Even If the World Turns Against Me

For most of my life, I have been obsessed with whether people like me.

Did I say something wrong? Was I being inconsiderate? Is somebody mad at me? Did I disappoint someone without realizing it?

I have spent so much time monitoring other people’s feelings toward me that sometimes I forget to live my own life.

I have never been the most popular person in the room. I am not naturally charming, effortlessly funny, or universally likable. For years, I treated that as a personal failure I needed to fix.

Be nicer. Be kinder. Be warmer. Be more interesting. Try harder.

But what if I try my best and it still isn’t enough? What if I never become the person everyone wants me to be?

I Cannot Spend My Entire Life Auditioning for Love

The exhausting thing about people-pleasing is that there is no finish line.

Even when someone likes you, you worry about losing their affection. Even when you do everything right, you wonder whether you missed something. And even if a thousand people love you today, their feelings could change tomorrow.

Being liked feels good. Of course it does. We all want to belong. But there is a difference between wanting to be loved and needing constant proof that you are lovable.

I cannot keep treating every conversation like an examination and every person’s changing mood like a verdict on my character.

I am tired of living as though one wrong sentence could cost me my place in the world.

I want to live, not audition.

What If Nobody Likes Me?

Let’s take the worst-case scenario seriously for a moment.

What if nobody likes me? What if I never become particularly popular? What if nobody even shows up to my funeral?

Well, I will be dead, so I suppose I will have bigger problems. Or no problems at all.

Dark humor aside, I cannot build my entire life around preventing something I cannot completely control.

We are no longer living in caves, depending on a tribe for every aspect of our survival. Social rejection and loneliness can still hurt, but another person’s approval is not the price I must pay simply to exist.

I can earn a living, enjoy my hobbies, and build a meaningful life without being everybody’s favorite person.

And if I end up alone more often than I would like, I can learn to live with that reality without turning it into a reason to hate myself.

It would not be my ideal life. But an imperfect life is still a life I can live.

If Nobody Accepts Me, I Still Can

I cannot control how everyone sees me. I cannot guarantee that my intentions will always be understood or that my kindness will always be returned.

But I can decide how I treat myself when they leave.

If nobody accepts me, the least I can do is stop rejecting myself on their behalf.

I can acknowledge my flaws without turning them into my entire identity. I can want to improve without making my current self miserable.

I may not love every part of myself. But I can accept myself.

I do not have to love everything about myself to stop being at war with myself.

Even If the World Turns Against Me

Life is temporary. Relationships change, reputations fade, and one day, all of us will die, regardless of how likable, successful, or accomplished we were.

I do not say this because nothing matters. I say it because not everything deserves the amount of suffering we give it.

I do not want to spend my limited time on earth constantly wondering whether I have disappointed someone. I want to be kinder because kindness matters, not because I am terrified of being disliked. I want to grow because growth makes life better, not because I believe the person I am today is unworthy.

And if, despite my best efforts, I remain awkward, imperfect, misunderstood, or isolated, then so be it.

Maybe I will do better in another lifetime. Maybe some things about me will never change as much as I wish they would.

What else can I do except keep living?

I refuse to make other people’s approval the condition for my own existence.

I have tried my best. I am still trying. And I am allowed to be at peace with that, even when the results are not what I hoped for.

Sometimes, after all the overthinking and exhausting attempts to become someone easier to love, you just have to say:

Fuck it.

Even if the world turns against me, I will still have to keep going.
